Incoming Freshman and Families
Schedule
-
Open gyms and workouts will begin again in mid-September. If they are not playing a fall sport , we expect them to be there.
-
The season starts in mid-November. We will practice 6 days a week. Practice times will vary. Practices will be at Silverton HS. Freshman usually practice before school. Missing practices means missing game time. “It is very hard for us to have a good program if our players miss practice"
-
We do not have a game schedule yet for winter break, but most years we play multiple games. Plan on a game around the 22nd and a tournament around the 27-30th. Players will receive two or three days off around Christmas, and one or two around New Years.
-
The season runs through the middle to end of February: so does a player's commitment.
-
Vacation time is not during Thanksgiving break, it is not during winter break, and it is not during June. We want committed basketball players and families. Parents play a HUGE role in this.
Workout Expectations
-
Players will have an opportunity to lift weights and get stronger and more athletic. It is hoped they take advantage of this opportunity.
-
The offseason emphasis is on skills and fundamental development. In-season emphasis is on team development. Therefore, if a player truly wants to develop, it will take intentional, off season work ethic. This can be accomplished alongside additional sports.
Behavior expectations
-
We believe that character is important. Players with high character ultimately become better players. The journey to be a varsity high school basketball player is difficult. Players who lack character will not have the discipline or work ethic to confront the difficulties along the way.
-
Athletes need to focus on the classroom. If they are not passing classes and engaging and demonstrating leadership, they will be re-focused. Our expectation is that our athletes attend all classes and sit in the front of class if possible.
-
The journey to be a varsity high school basketball parent can be difficult as well. We ask that you remain encouraging and thoughtful, supportive and humble. Help your player embrace adversity and frustration, rather than avoid it and bicker. Please do not coach them from the stands. Yelling “shoot it” or “box out” might seem helpful, but it is not. Players are not video games to be controlled. As a freshman, they can hear your voice, but as seniors, we want them to be able to react independently and confidently. When the entire gym is yelling in the last minute of the game that decides the Mid Willamette Conference Championship, we want them to have practiced being within themselves and just simply make reads and play. One potential indicator of this is if your player makes a play (good or bad) on the court, do they look at you in the stands? If so, perhaps you are too involved in their basketball decision-making.
-
Our program rule is that if you are coaching your son during the game, we take him out and tell him - “Hey Johnny, I took you out because your mom keeps trying to coach you from the stands.”Parent coaches are done after 8th grade.
-
Trust the process of climbing the program hierarchy. Many freshmen come into the program with expectations that are unreasonable. Playing varsity basketball is the hardest sport in the school to get playing time) or make the team) because of the amount of kids who want to play and the limited minutes available. We believe playing time and opportunity is earned everyday through your actions. We do not believe in gamers. Starting at the bottom of the program and climbing your way up can be difficult, but it will build character and create a culture of mental toughness which is what we want.
-
Before tryouts : your son will need to complete an athletic participation form and a physical. This information will be provided online or can be found at our athletic office at the school.
-
Tryouts this winter will be Nov. 16, 17, 18. Times are TBD.
-
The winter season- Freshman will practice before school.
-
If your child makes a team it is mandatory that he has parent representation at our parent meeting on Nov. 1st at 4pm. Check our website for more information. www.silvertonboysbasketball.com
